Is your Boiler not working in these freezing temperatures?

If your boiler has stopped working in these freezing temperatures, then there is a good chance that your condensate pipe has frozen.

Hopefully this guide will help you defrost your condensate pipe and get the Boiler back up and running.

How do you know if the condensate pipe is frozen?

If part of your condensate pipework is outside, during prolonged periods of very cold weather, this may freeze up.  You may start to hear gurgling noises coming from the Boiler and it may fail to ignite, it may also display an error code.

What is a condensate pipe?

Condensing boilers have a pipe fitted to them to carry away water as a result of the condensing process. It is a plastic pipe that runs from the Boiler to the drainage system.

How to safely thaw a frozen condensate pipe?

  • Look for an outside pipe which is connected to the Boiler.
  • If safe to do so, pour WARM (not boiling water) along the pipe.
  • You could also try holding a hot water bottle against the pipe, allowing the heat to be continuously applied.
  • Once you feel the blockage has melted, you can try to reset the Boiler.

How to prevent this happening again;

Insulate your condensate pipe with a waterproof insulation to protect the pipe getting wet and freezing up again.  Also turn up your heating control on the Boiler.

If you continue to have problems, do not hesitate to contact us (01204 456996) and we will make an appointment for an engineer to take a look.

Stay safe and warm!
